Thursday, July 07, 2005Music LessonsI teach music lessons on a regular basis. Most of my students are young and are either beginners or of the intermediate level. There isn't that much business around a small town, but I like to teach all that I can. I got a phone call this morning from a possible new student. She introduced herself as a grandma who needed a little summer help. Now tell me why adults seem so afraid to suggest that they need a little help. She sounded embarrassed that she didn't know how to play her instrument. I find it refreshing to teach an adult now and then. They are more dedicated and they actually seem to want to learn! With kids, they are often there because a parent is pushing them into lessons. Occasionally I find a kid that is actually dedicated, but more often than not, I have to attempt to inspire them to practice. Adults are paying their own money for the experience, so I find that they are more willing to practice so they don't waste their money. I am proud of my new student. She admitted that she needs some help, and called me to get it. I assured her that I love to teach adults, and it didn't matter to me that even though I am much younger than her, I do know what I am talking about. I can help her learn the things she wants to learn this summer, and it will be a pleasure for me to share my knowledge. My only hope is that someday, adults will stop being so afraid to admit that they need help. I am one of the first to acknowledge that I don't know something, my husband can usually answer my question, so I am quick to ask. I remember a quote from someone famous, don't ask me who, because I DON'T REMEMBER... When your young you think you know everything When you are a little older, you realize that you don't know as much as you thought you did When you get old, you know that you really don't know much of anything. I don't know everything, but I am willing to share what I do know with those who need it and are willing to ask. I love to teach, but first, the student must realize that they need a teacher. ![]() ![]()
